Testing an upgrade screen without obscuring cancellation information

Compare upgrade screens while keeping billing terms and cancellation access clear, then judge verified purchases alongside later paid use.

Test an upgrade screen only when every version makes the plan terms and cancellation route clear. Compare the explanation or presentation you want to assess while preserving the full charge, renewal terms and a usable way to manage or cancel. A higher purchase rate is not enough if people misunderstand the offer or cannot later find their way out.

Decide what every version must show

Record the offer and purchase route before assigning versions. Check the plan name, included features, trial duration if offered, full billed amount and billing period, what happens when a trial ends, and how to cancel.

If free access remains available, make the way to decline clear. Review small screens, larger text settings and the screen immediately before the store purchase sheet.

Make the terms easy to understand and provide a usable way to manage or cancel. Apple recommends allowing subscribers to see their subscription status in the app and easily manage or turn off an auto-renewable subscription. Keep these conditions in both versions.

Test a defined change

A useful question might be whether a task example helps eligible people choose a plan they continue to use. Keep the same plan, charge and cancellation route in both versions.

Change the explanation, order or visual presentation tied to that question. If several elements change together, describe the result as a whole-screen comparison.

Assign eligible people consistently before they can reach either version. Include everyone assigned in the purchase analysis, including those who leave before pressing a button.

Record the app version, storefront, market, existing subscription status and trial eligibility. An existing subscriber should reach management or restore access rather than an unintended purchase path.

Measure the purchase and what follows

Measure / Why keep it

Eligible people assigned
Provides the denominator for each version.
Verified subscription starts
Separates purchases from button taps.
First paid period and later renewal
Shows whether trial interest became continuing paid use.
Access to cancellation information
Reveals whether the management route is hidden or blocked.
Dismissals, exits and support issues
Helps identify possible confusion or interference.

Later outcomes need a completed observation window. A trial-start lift does not establish more retained paying users.

If the plan, traffic mix or product changes during the comparison, account for those changes before attributing a later difference to the screen. With little traffic, report uncertainty rather than naming a winner from a small apparent gap.

Review the full customer path

For each version, check declining, starting a trial, purchasing, restoring an existing subscription and opening subscription management afterwards. Cancellation information should remain findable without going through another upgrade offer.

Record the exact screens, terms, audience rules, dates and concurrent changes alongside the results. Choose a version only after considering informed choice, purchase outcomes and the management path together.
