App Store Listings

Part of Mobile app growth strategy

App acquisition versus mobile website marketing

Decide when to market an app, a mobile website or both by comparing the user's task, installation steps and completed outcomes.

Choose app acquisition when installing helps someone complete an ongoing job. Choose mobile website marketing when they can finish the immediate job in a browser. Many products need both. Compare the routes by completed user tasks, while accounting for the different people and steps in each route.

Start with the task

Someone checking a single service detail may need a clear mobile page. Someone managing an ongoing account may benefit from an app if its actual features improve that repeated task. These are hypotheses to check for your product, not universal performance claims.

Is search discovery part of the goal?Make the mobile page useful and accessible.Make the listing and first-use promise accurate.
What counts as success?A completed web task or other relevant outcome.A completed in-app task and appropriate later use.

Google uses the mobile version of a site's content for indexing and ranking. The quality and completeness of that page matter when Google Search discovery is part of the plan. This does not guarantee traffic or mean every task belongs on a website.

Account for installation

An app campaign may ask someone to move from an ad or page to a store, install the app, open it and sign in before doing the advertised task. List the steps your own route requires.

If the core task is available on the mobile website, compare the full routes using the same task outcome. If the app provides an additional benefit, explain it where the person chooses a route.

Keep measurement definitions separate. A store listing click, completed acquisition and app first open are different observations.

Make both routes useful

On supported Android devices, a correctly configured App Link can take someone with the app to matching in-app content. The website URL can take someone without the app to web content. The content and routes must actually exist. Check what happens after sign-in, when content is unavailable and when someone stays on the web.

Avoid making an installation prompt the only route to information promised by a web ad unless the task requires the app. Where the app genuinely helps with continuing work, explain that benefit after a relevant web task. Let the person choose.

Compare outcomes fairly

Choose an outcome, such as a completed booking or saved project, and define the eligible audience and observation window for each route. Report web task completion among eligible web visitors and app task completion among people entering the app route. Include the losses before first app use. Label each denominator rather than presenting one unexplained conversion figure.

These groups may differ in intent and prior relationship with the product. A difference between their completion rates does not, by itself, show that the route caused it. Look at later value too, using a window that suits the task. An infrequent task does not require daily app opens to be useful, and a successful one-off web visit need not produce an install.

Key Metrics to Track for Fair Outcome Comparison

Eligible Web Visitors
Web task completions among users who accessed via mobile site
App Acquisition Rate
Number of store clicks → app installs
First App Open Rate
Percentage of installs that result in first open
In-App Task Completion
Completed tasks by users entering the app route
